7 Signs Your Workplace Is Overdue a Deep Clean

Most workplaces have a regular cleaning routine, so it’s easy to assume everything is under control. But routine cleaning only deals with what’s on the surface. Over time, dirt, dust and bacteria build up in the places daily cleaning doesn’t reach, and the warning signs can be easy to miss because they develop gradually.

If any of the following sound familiar, your workplace may be overdue a deep clean.

1. Odours that cleaning doesn’t shift

A smell that keeps coming back despite regular cleaning usually means the source hasn’t been dealt with. Odours can build up in carpets, soft furnishings, drains, washrooms and ventilation, and standard cleaning products tend to mask the problem rather than remove it.

2. Visible grime in corners, edges and hard-to-reach areas

Look at skirting boards, behind and under furniture, around the base of equipment and in corners. Built-up dirt, dust and discolouration in these areas is a clear sign that surface cleaning isn’t getting deep enough.

3. Dusty vents, light fittings and high surfaces

High-level areas rarely get cleaned as part of a daily routine. If you can see dust on air vents, light fittings, tops of cabinets or ceiling tiles, it’s likely to be circulating around the workplace too. These areas often need specialist access equipment, which is why they get missed for so long.

4. Stained, worn or dull flooring

Carpets that look grubby even after hoovering, or hard floors that look dull and sticky despite mopping, usually have ground-in dirt that standard cleaning can’t lift. This can also affect how professional the space feels to visitors and clients.

5. Grubby washrooms and kitchens

Washrooms and kitchen areas see heavy use and build up bacteria quickly. Limescale, stained grout, grease around appliances and unpleasant smells that return soon after cleaning are all signs that a deeper clean is needed.

6. More sickness or complaints from staff

An increase in staff sickness, or comments about air quality, dust or cleanliness, is worth taking seriously. While there can be many causes, a workplace that isn’t being cleaned thoroughly can contribute to a less healthy environment.

7. You can’t remember when it was last done

If nobody can say when the last deep clean took place, it’s probably been too long. Even if the workplace looks fine day to day, build-up happens gradually. A deep clean is also worth scheduling ahead of an inspection, audit, client visit or office move.

What a deep clean actually covers

A professional deep clean goes beyond routine tasks. Depending on the premises, it may include thorough floor and carpet cleaning, washroom and kitchen descaling and sanitising, cleaning behind and underneath furniture and equipment, and cleaning of high-level areas, vents and fittings. The exact scope depends on the type of workplace and what it needs.
