The fast response allowed the SafeGroup technicians to clean the spill over a weekend, a period of production downtime, so the company and its customers were not inconvenienced.
Emergency cleaning was needed after a mixture of food oil, starch and water spilled into a basement area at the factory, which presented confined space risk.
Specialist food-safe chemicals
The SafeGroup, supported by the client’s site safety team, carried out a point of works risk assessment that mitigated the risk, allowing cleaning work to be carried out.
Two SafeGroup operatives were then mobilised from the company’s Birmingham operating hub and spent Saturday and Sunday cleaning the spill at the factory.
They used a specialist food-safe cleaning chemical, eliminating the risk of food contamination, while ensuring the site and machinery were cleaned to the highest sanitary standards.
Fast factory cleaning response
Afterwards, a senior production manager at the food factory contacted the SafeGroup’s Business Development Manager Andrew Henry to praise the spill clean-up work carried out:
“I just wanted to say a thank you to your team for the work you completed over the weekend. I inspected the area and was very happy with the level of clean you achieved in such a difficult space.
I appreciate how fast you responded to our request and how efficiently you made arrangements with out site to supply all the required paperwork and permits.”
Andrew Henry said:
“We’re delighted that our customer was so pleased with the support we gave them. Ultimately, it’s about delivering often challenging cleaning solutions quickly, safely and effectively.
Fresh food production sites must observe some of the highest hygiene standards in the food industry, and they only want to work with external contractors who they can trust to do the same, especially when responding to an emergency cleaning issue.
In this case, it was vital to respond quickly to gain the time needed to devise the risk assessment and method statement – and agree all other protocols for working on a highly-controlled site – in time to carry out the emergency cleaning work over the first available weekend.
As the SafeGroup has significant experience working in a range of high-risk and complex live environments, including hospitals, prisons and shopping centres, this is part of the assurance we can give clients.”
