The Challenge: Structural Carbon Contamination in Exposed Architectural Elements

Major fire incidents across London and underground facilities presented significant restoration challenges for high-traffic and structural sites:

  • Deep Soot Ingress: Following a major fire in London, soot damage heavily contaminated external exposed brickwork, requiring more than standard pressure washing.
  • Subterranean Contamination: A fire originating in a skip within an underground car park caused widespread carbon deposits across structural surfaces.
  • Complex Surface Layers: In certain archway locations, fires damaged previously painted brickwork, necessitating the complete removal of both fire damage and legacy paint layers to restore the building’s original aesthetic.
  • Overhead Structural Cleaning: Exposed concrete ceilings required specialised cleaning to remove fire damage without compromising the structural integrity of the material.

Our Response: Precision Blast Cleaning & Multi-Surface Decontamination

SafeGroup deployed specialist fire recovery teams to implement advanced cleaning methodologies tailored to each unique substrate:

  • Precision Blast Cleaning: We utilised specialised blast cleaning techniques in underground car parks and archways to safely lift carbon deposits from porous surfaces.
  • Surface Restoration: For London archways, we performed a dual-action process of fire cleaning and total paint stripping, returning the exposed brickwork to its original state.
  • Specialist Concrete Treatment: Our teams carried out targeted fire damage cleans on concrete ceilings, ensuring the removal of all soot while preserving the concrete finish.
  • External Brick Restoration: We applied precision cleaning to external brickwork following a major fire, successfully neutralising soot damage on prominent building facades.

The Outcome: Restoring Structural Integrity and Aesthetics

Our technical response allowed for the rapid restoration of these sites, avoiding the need for intrusive structural repairs:

  • Aesthetic Recovery: Brickwork that was previously soot-stained or heavily painted was completely stripped and cleaned, revealing the original architectural finish.
  • Environmental Safety: By removing carbon and soot through precision cleaning, we neutralized lingering odors and hazardous particulates within enclosed spaces like car parks and archways.
  • Operational Reinstatement: The use of precision cleaning allowed these commercial and public spaces to be returned to a safe, clean condition following major fire events.
