When large-scale, unexpected flooding occurs the impact on business continuity can be devastating. In November 2025 following a prolonged spell of inclement weather, the River Monnow burst its banks, inundating Monmouth town centre with floodwater. Marks & Spencer’s Foodhall was a store severely impacted by the inciden,t with the floodwater reaching significant depths across the entire ground four. The flood was “Black Water” (Category 3), containing high levels of silt, agricultural runoff and urban contaminants. Meaning it presented a major biohazard and structural risk.
SafeGroup were deployed to provide services to recover the site and make the environment safe for refrigeration and electrical engineers to be able to work. Our teams performed deep cleaning and disinfection across the sales floor and back-of-house. We didn’t just clean the visible areas; we removed and decontaminated refrigeration components and performed targeted cleaning behind fixed chillers to eliminate hidden bacterial reservoirs.
On the 2nd December 2025 the store was reopened to the general public in time for the Christmas season.
