The Challenge: Protecting Heritage Fabric in a Live Clinical Environment
A national healthcare group commissioned SafeGroup to address the deteriorating condition of a private hospital in Kent, which is a protected listed building. The roof, soffits, gutters, and windows had not been cleaned for an extended period, resulting in an unsightly buildup of grime, algae, and moss that conflicted with the client’s high-quality brand.
Beyond aesthetics, there was significant concern that this organic growth would detrimentally affect the condition of the building’s structural assets.
Accessing the work areas proved exceptionally difficult due to the building’s complex design, which featured many sloping roofs at different levels and angles. These architectural complexities had direct implications for safety and required a strategy that protected the listed building’s fabric while minimising disruption for patients, visitors, and medical staff.
Our Response: Remote Access and High-Heat Specialist Cleaning
We recommended carrying out the cleaning work from a truck mounted platform. This had important advantages:
- Our cleaning team could work remotely, reaching all areas of the roof without having to set foot on the building.
- Safety and flexibility was maximised with no need for unsightly scaffolding that could have affected building fabric.
- We could reach multiple locations from a limited number of positions, minimising disruption.
We used a power washing system set at low pressure and high heat to protect potentially delicate roof tiles.
As well as carrying out thorough cleaning, we treated all areas with a specialist chemical to slow algae regrowth.
The Outcome: Restoring Aesthetic Appeal and Asset Life
- Roof assets were cleaned safely with no risk of damage.
- The method used was also the fastest option.
- Close liaison with hospital staff reduced disruption to a minimum.
- The roof was transformed and was given extended protection against recontamination
