The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) has commissioned SafeGroup to install Touchpoint Shield™ in washrooms and toilet areas.
Its decision follows installation trials at the authority’s fusion research centre near Abingdon, Oxfordshire, that proved the coating suppressed the build-up of SARS-Cov-2, the COVID-19 virus.
SafeGroup technicians have now applied the fast-drying and nearly invisible Touchpoint Shield™ coating to showers, toilets and taps at multiple locations across the 200-acre nuclear research site.
It has been installed in time for the UKAEA to provide enhanced surface protection against the new Omicron COVID-19 variant.
Keith Musgrave, the UKAEA’s Head of Buildings and Facilities Management, said: “Following the results of controlled testing over several locations, the results were conclusive as to the coating’s effectiveness.
“The level of service from SafeGroup throughout the whole process has been efficient, collaborative and totally professional.”
The UKAEA carries out fusion energy research for the UK government.
Its Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) is a global leader in fusion energy research which, if successful, will harness the power of the stars, including our Sun, to provide plentiful, low-carbon energy.
Chris MacDonald, SafeGroup’s Business Strategy Director, who has been leading the Touchpoint Shield™ installation, said: “Our work at the CCFE demonstrates how Touchpoint Shield™ is quick and simple to install and instantly begins to provide long-term, active protection against SARS-Cov-2.
“Clients also value the fact that coating protects against a range of other pathogens with a long history of causing illness and lost working days, including flu, norovirus, the winter vomiting bug, and the staphylococcus bacteria that causes gastro infections.
“To this end, Touchpoint Shield™ is helping organisations, like the UKAEA and others, enhance long-term hygiene programmes to combat workplace infections that can result in harm to their employees and visitors, and contribute to costly sickness absences.”
