Health precautions around flooding

Flooding can be potentially very dangerous and taking suitable safety precautions is vital. Floodwater can be contaminated with pollutants which can have an impact on your health and wellbeing. There are also various other risks such as missing manhole covers on roads and pavements and people being swept up and losing their stepping in fast-flowing water.

Minimising the risks

If there is a flood on your property there are a few steps you can take to minimise the risk:

  • Ensure you are washing your hands regularly after contact with floodwater as it could be contaminated with sewage or agricultural waste
  • Cover any open wounds with airtight bandages
  • Keep children and pets away from water
  • Wear the correct personal protective equipment including gloves
  • Make sure that any areas that will be in contact with food are property disinfected
  • Talk to your GP if you experience any stomach upset

The dangers of floodwater

Although flooding, the World Health Organisation (WHO) states that the risk of contaminating infectious diseases from flood water is relatively low unless the water supply is compromised.

There are still many dangers: floodwater can contain potentially harmful contaminants and water-borne diseases, such as typhoid fever, cholera, leptospirosis, and hepatitis A. Flood water can also increase the risk of vector- or carrier-borne diseases including malaria and dengue hemorrhagic fever. It is important that if you feel any discomfort to contact your GP or a medical professional.

How to stay safe

When faced with flood water the most important thing to do is to be aware of the potential risks, The Environmental Agency (EA) and Public Health England (PHE) advises you to avoid walking through the water completely, and once a flood has been identified you should contact a professional clean up service who are correctly equipped.

When should you call a professional

“When you don’t know what to do” is the simple answer.
